University of Minnesota Professor Daniel Spirn will serve as the next director of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), an internationally recognized research center based within the College of Science and Engineering. Spirn's appointment is effective July 1, 2017.
Spirn was appointed to the position by College of Science and Engineering Dean Samuel B. Mukasa upon the unanimous recommendation of the IMA's Board of Governors. Spirn will replace Fadil Santosa, the IMA's director since 2008, who will remain a professor of mathematics at the university.
Spirn brings more than 15 years of experience in the mathematical sciences to his new position. He began his career at Brown University in the mathematics department and arrived in Minnesota as assistant professor of mathematics in 2004.
Spirn joined the IMA as deputy director in 2015 and served as director of the Minnesota Center for Industrial Mathematics from 2010-2015. He received an NSF Career Award in 2010.
"I firmly believe that the IMA has a place in the future of the mathematical sciences," Spirn says. "The IMA has flourished under Fadil’s leadership, and I am dedicated to ensuring its continued success."
