Artificial Intelligence in a Material World

3M develops technologies in a multitude of industrial applications from adhesives and abrasives to aerospace, transportation, and healthcare. How is a 100+ year old company like 3M continuing to innovate by incorporating digital technologies, like artificial intelligence, into their solutions? Given the nature of our businesses, 3M scientists consider how to merge the digital and physical worlds, how to manage the transition between human- to computer- controlled systems, and how to best leverage both biological and artificial brains. These considerations will be explored via descriptions of 3M products leveraging artificial intelligence while also providing advice on the transition from grad school to industry and preparing for a successful career.

Bio-sketch:
Dr. Jennifer F. Schumacher is an Advanced Research Specialist and co-founder of the AI group in the corporate research lab at 3M. Her academic background includes a BSE in Bioengineering from Arizona State University and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Schumacher joined 3M in 2010. Her contributions to 3M’s innovative products include the 3M™ Display Quality Score, a predictor of the perceptual quality of any digital display, and several new technologies in applications for anti-counterfeiting, predictive health analytics, and body armor. Her efforts have been recognized with three granted patents, over 25 patent applications, and four 3M Circle of Technical Excellence and Innovation awards. She is currently leading creation of the next generation 3M technology platforms in artificial intelligence.
