Master-equation Approach to Mesoscale Description of Epitaxial Growth

Mesoscale models for the motion of line defects (steps) on crystal surfaces have been valuable in making predictions for the evolution of nanostructures. Traditionally, such models have phenomenological character. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress in understanding the atomistic origin of a family of step flow models by use of a high-dimensional master equation for adsorbed atoms in 1+1 dimensions.
