For-hire trucking services in the USA is a nearly perfect market of ~207,000 trucking companies, 99% having 50 trucks or fewer. Trucking went through a transformational period from deregulation in 1980 to the great recession where the industry was reinvented. The recession and emerging technology has again disrupted the trucking industry to what appears to be a new normal. Today’s new normal is represented by a rapid adoption of technology in the carrier, shipper and broker community. Carriers are becoming extremely sophisticated and approaching the shipper and broker community with expectations of yield management and improving ROIC. The shipper and broker community have full visibility to supply and demand balance and market pricing. Value for the shipper community is increasingly being created beyond the transaction of moving freight. This conversation will introduce the market and key forces worthy of research such as, technology, regulations and engagement strategies.
