Solving polynomial systems by homotopy continuation

We will give a brief introduction to pathtracking and how it is used to find the solutions of a polynomial system. We will discuss isolated solutions first and, as an extended example of the solution of a nontrivial system, discuss the solution by Charles Wampler and Alexander Morgan (both of GM R & D) and myself of the nine-point path synthesis problem for planar four-bars. As time permits, we will discuss the numerical irreducible decomposition developed by Verschelde, Wampler, and myself.
