In this tutorial, we discuss the role of network performance optimization, which is required when deploying real-world wireless networks to adjust to complex channel propagation effects, network layout irregularities and inhomogeneous traffic distributions. Traditional and automated optimization procedures are presented, along with a cellular optimization tool to enhance the coverage and the capacity of CDMA networks. The emerging trends in wireless data networks naturally lead to dynamic network optimizations. These trends are highlighted along with some of the critical components and a list of sample optimization problems. The problem of autonomous base station deployment and configuration is presented in more detail.
