In this tutorial, a possible evolution path for future wireless networks is discussed. In particular, a distributed radio network architecture is presented in which the network controller functionalities are integrated with the base station. We first motivate the migration towards a distributed architecture and present the salient features and the main difficulties in realizing this evolution path. Distributed mobility and radio resource management techniques are then proposed, along with a framework for dimensioning the backhaul network to support the required quality of service performances.
