A marked spatio-temporal version of the Hawkes. self-exciting point process is fit to a sequence of California earthquakes. A stress-release model is considered for the background intensity to take into account the release of tectonic strain following seismic events, and its gradual increase thereafter. Anisotropic clustering of aftershocks and spatial heterogeneity of background intensity, and the distribution of earthquake magnitudes are also explored.
