Scaling: The Impact of Coupled Fluid Flow and Geomechanical Deformation Modeling on 4D Seismic

Time-lapse seismic feasibility studies for compactible reservoirs such as Ekofisk in the North Sea require coupled flow simulation and geomechanical deformation modeling. After presenting an algorithm for staggered-in-time, 2-way coupling of flow and geomechanics, we describe an interesting numerical experiment based on the Belridge Field, California, in which microscale permeability changes appear to have a large-scale impact on seismic velocities.
