On the Combined Effects of Gravity and Air Flow on Flame Spread over Solid Fuels

An analysis is presented for the description of the leading edge region of a diffusion flame, spreading over the surface of a thermally thick solid fuel against a laminar air stream.

The structure of the leading edge region is determined by the upstream value A of the velocity gradient at the wall, the chemical reactivity - represented by the flame spread UN, of a stoichiometric mixture of the fuel and air-, and the tangential and normal components of gravity.
