Applications of Systematically Reduced Mechanisms to Combustion Research

This presentation will discuss the use of systematically reduced mechanisms in high-temperature combustion. These reduced mechanisms are derived from detailed mechanisms through the successive application of the quasi-steady-state approximation. The advantages and disadvantages of such an approach will be discussed as will several topics related to the development of reduced mechanisms.

One important topic is the degree of reduction possible for modeling various phenomena. This determines the range of applicability of the mechanism and the degree of computational effort required for a solution.

Another important topic is the algorithm for the development of the reduced mechanism through the identification of the steady-state species. While this MAY be done by analytic means, it is a relatively difficult problem and physical or chemical intuition will still play an important role.
