Integration of Laboratory Studies and Simulation Tools for Design and Operation of In Situ Bioremediation

A simulation model was developed in support of an in situ bioremediation demonstration at the DOE Hanford site in Washington state. Laboratory tests were used to help define field-scale nutrient addition strategies for co-metabolic in situ biodegradation of tetrachloromethane under denitrification conditions using acetate as the substrate. The models, calibrated with bench- and field-scale data, were used to answer field-scale system design and operation questions. The field demonstration was completed in the spring of 1996 using a two-well injection/extraction groundwater recirculation system. Pulsed nutrient injection strategies were successfully used to distribute biomass away from the injection well to maximize the zone of active contaminant destruction. Co-metabolic tetrachloromethane destruction was sustained during the 4 month demonstration. Measured and simulated results are reported.
