Although the title may have annoyed you, it is more than just word play. I hope to present a brief summary of the philosophy and methodology of mathematical modeling, with special emphasis of course on modeling tumor growth. The historical evolution of tumor models will be mentioned, along with the different types of approaches that have been made to what is a horrendously complex problem. I will wonder out loud about whether some new paradigm is necessary to provide different insights into the problem of growth and development of tumors. Hopefully this will produce more light than heat. Finally, if time and participants permit, there will be a 5 minute summary (at the end of the workshop) on Mathematical Modeling according to the Far Side. This will expose overseas participants to the creative scientific genius of Gary Larson, and provide an opportunity to see our serious endeavors in a different light.
