Automated Linux Reinstallation
The Automated Linux Reinstaller was created to help
system administrators maintain a large number of Linux machines.
The theory is simple; once a machine has been set up and configured, it's
possible to reinstall and rebuild the machine again and again. A
list of features of this package appears below.
-
Support for multiple architectures (intel, sparc, alpha).
-
Complete RPM support.
-
SSH authentication.
-
Support for custom package installation sets.
-
Laptop Support.
-
Support for dual-boot environments.
-
Single machine configuration file.
The reinstaller is based entirely on RedHat Linux.
It relies on RedHat's machine configuration schemes as well as their package
management system (RPM). To make things a little more secure, the
installer also utilizes SSH authentication for secure reinstallation sessions
and machine identification.
Currently, the project has come to a standstill
as I no longer have time to develop it. The current version is 2.0
and can be downloaded at the bottom of this page. There are many
enhancements in the current release over previous versions including support
for the sparc and alpha, simplified directory structure and much more.
Version 2.0 is a replacement for any previous version.
Very minimal documentation can be found at http://www.math.umn.edu/~peter/Reinstall/docs/index.html and http://www.ima.umn.edu/~klee/Reinstall/docs/index.html.
If anyone is interested in helping me develop this
package further, please feel free to send me mail at peter@math.umn.edu
. Time permitting, only massive bugs will be fixed. Meanwhile,
packages for Version 2.0 of the reinstaller are available at the address
