A Critique of Forensic Laboratories' Use of Statistics for RFLP-DNA Matching and Profiling

Seymour Geisser, University of Minnesota

We present the statistical methods used by the two principal forensic laboratories in the United States and critically discuss their claims and attendant flaws. In particular, we demonstrate that the assumptions that their relative frequency estimates of a DNA profile in a population are based on are flawed. Also, the claims that these estimates are conservative are shown to be false.
