Genetics and statistics are twin subjects, each of which has significantly affected the development of the other. Here we discuss various applications of statistical methods to problems in human genetics. One main application concerns linkage analysis, specifically how to use statistical methods to test whether a given marker locus is linked (and in practice closely linked) to a disease locus. Another application describes some statistical theory necessary to estimate genetic parameters when all the standard assumptions of statistics (independently and identically distributed random variables, in particular) do not hold.
