IMA Proceedings Guideline/Document Style
It is our goal to publish a high quality book of well-written
articles. Articles may be either expository
or original. They should, however, not have been submitted or
published elsewhere. Expository
papers that refer to work published elsewhere for details are
OK, but they must be original as exposition. There are
no lower or upper bounds on length. (Past submissions have averaged
about 20 pages per article.)
In
case you are planning to include in your manuscript figures/tables/quotations
or other illustrations derived from other sources you must obtain
permission rights from the original publisher.
An electronic version of the permission rights letter is available
upon request.
Our
aim is to quickly produce a volume of high quality reviewed
papers collecting in one place a description of where we are
now and where we are going, which we believe will be a valuable
addition to the literature in the field. We encourage you to
submit a manuscript. You may,of course, add one or more coauthors
for the written contribution.
The Volume(s) will be prepared in a uniform style (using LaTeX).
IMA Proceedings style files are available. Although we prefer
to have the papers typeset in LaTeX2e we also accept all forms
of electronic versions: plain TeX, AMSTeX, Word, ASCII file
are also acceptable. You can send us the file by e-mail or disk,
in addition to a hard copy, and we will handle the style formatting
for you.
The IMA Proceedings style files are available via the link below.
If you are preparing your paper in LaTeX we can also e-mail
the style files to you upon request. E-mail our Publications
Office staff at pubs@ima.umn.edu.
LaTeX2e IMA Proceedings Style Files
The files ima.cls
and ima10.clo
are based on LaTeX2e. These 2 files are modified version of
siamltex.cls and siam10.clo respectively.
Some
of the features of the IMA Proceedings Style include:
- Provides
automatic comma before the word "and" in case of multiple
authors (more than 2).
- You
can use the command \same, \bysame or \sameathor in the Bibliography
to indicate the same author preceding the current bibliographic
entry.
- Appendix
can be invoked by \appendix or \Appendix and the word APPENDIX
will automatically appear centered. Appendix must appear before
the Bibliography. Section headings will come out as A, B,
C, etc.
- Figures/tables
or any other floating images are numbered consecutively and
not according to sections. Example: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure
3 instead of Figure 1.1 Figure 1.2 and so on. Consequently,
there is no need to do setcounter/addtocounter command whenever
your start a new section. Due to the floating features of
figures and tables, Springer-Verlag prefers to number the
figures/table this way so it does not matter if the figures/tables
float in the wrong section as long as they appear before the
bibliography.
- Most
of the theorem-like environments are already predefined in
ima.cls: Theorem, lemma, corollary, proposition, definition,
remark, conjecture, axiom, example, exercise. By default,
Theorems, Lemmas, etc. are numbered independently within the
section. Examples: Theorem 1.1, Theorem 1.2; Lemma 1.1, Lemma
1.2, Corollary 1.1, Corollary 1.2, etc.
- In
incorporating graphics into the LaTeX source, you can use
\usepackage{graphicx} or \usepackage{graphics}
Example: \includegraphics[angle=, width=]{filename.ps}
\usepackage{epsfig}
Example:\epsfig{file=filename.ps,clip=,height=\textheight,angle=}
Similarly, you can still use psfig and epsf
which were written for LaTeX209 for figures/tables placement.
Type \input{psfig} or \input{epsf}. Note
that the curly braces must be used to avoid serious complications
like overwriting existing files. In some cases you can also
include "epsf" and "psfig" in the usepackage as shown in
the "sample.tex."
- For
bibliography, use \bibliographystyle{siam} when using
BibTeX program. You can also just append the filename.bbl
to the LaTeX source. Otherwise, just follow the sequence in
the example given at the bottom of
this page.
- Almost
all the packages for LaTeX2e work with the ima.cls
and ima10.clo except for those which deal primarily
with theorem environment such as \amsthm and \amsmath,sw20aip,
sw20amm1, sw20bams, sw20jart work.
- Packages
which work include \usepackage{afterpage,amsfonts,verbatim,amssymb,epsf,fancybox,
graphics,graphicx, float,latexsym,amstex,epsfig,epic,eepic,
doc,exscale, multicol}.
Below
are the major guidelines for those who are submitting papers
for the IMA Proceedings Volumes.
- We
do accept all electronic versions typed in plain TeX, AMS
TeX or whatever typesetting program you have. However, we
prefer to have the papers typeset in LaTeX whenever possible.
- Use
a 11pt size font under the documentstyle option (when you
use the style files listed above you do not have to specify
the font size)
- The
width of the paper should not exceed
- 4.48
truein or
- 324
truept or
- 27
picas
The
above dimension is particularly crucial when your manuscript
includes an encapsulated postscript graphic using either the
epsf.sty or psfig.sty files. The same width is also important
in determining the length of your displayed equations/tables.
Springer-Verlag is very strict with regard to overhanging text
within the specified text margin.
-
Running title should make sense. Avoid cutting a long title
just to fit the specified margin.
When
you use the documentstyle file below you do not have to worry
about the specifications mentioned above. just follow the procedures
below:
\documentclass[twoside]{ima}
\pagestyle{myheadings}
\usepackage{}
\begin{document}
\markboth{AUTHOR'S NAME (ALL CAPS)}{MANUSCRIPT TITLE (ALL CAPS)}
%Note: In case the names of all authors will not fit the text
%margin in the runninghead, just type in the first author's name
%as it appears in the manuscript and put ET AL.
%Example: \markboth{JOSEPH B. ANDERSON ET AL.}
\title{ALL CAPS}
\author{AUTHOR's NAME ALL CAPS\thanks{author's address, e-mail
address, grant acknowledgement.}
\and
author\thanks{}}
\maketitle
\begin{abstract}
\end{abstract}
\begin{keywords}
\end{keywords}
{\AMSMOS %If you do not have a hard copy of the 2000 AMS Subject
% Classification Codes you can look at
% http://www.ams.org/index/mathweb/msc2000/index.html
\endAMSMOS}
\section{Only the first letter of the first word is upper
case except when it is a person's name or an abbreviation example: DNA}
AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE USE LATEX'S CROSS REFERENCING FEATURE:
\label{} \ref{} \cite{}
\begin{thebibliography}{10}
%You can use the bibtex program here instead.
\bibliography{filename}
\bibliographystyle{siam} or \bibliographystyle{plain}
\bibitem{}
{\sc author's name}, {\sl title of the article}, volume number, publisher, year, pp. -- .
\end{thebibliography}
\end{document}
