Title: Tropical varieties
Abstract: In tropical mathematics we consider the max-plus
algebra (R,max,+) where polynomial functions become piecewise linear.
In this talk we will recall the definition of the Groebner fan of a
polynomial ideal and see why it makes sense to define the tropical
variety of an ideal as a certain subfan of the Groebner fan. While
other equivalent definitions exist, this one immediately gives one
(slow) algorithm for computing the tropical variety through the use of
"Groebner walk" techniques.
The talk will be a follow-up to Hannah Markwig's talk last week
and will prepare the audience for my presentation in the upcoming
workshop on software for algebraic geometry where I will present
algorithms and the software Gfan for computing tropical varieties.
