A class of finite element models called zone models, provide
the ability to predict the environment in a building in real
time. The opportunities afforded by this capability span the
applications from parameter studies of the effects of fire in
a building, to real time response for these extreme environmental
events. This paper will discuss the mathematical background
which makes this possible, the constraints imposed by the need
for rapid calculation and some of the applications. Also discussed
are the means by which such models can be verified and validated.
