Three-dimensional photonic band gap structures provide the promise of interesting physical properties as well as the possibility of new and innovative devices. At Bell Labs, we have made significant progress in both the fabrication of three dimensional photonic crystals as well as the theoretical understanding of their optical properties. I will discuss our theoretical modeling efforts for the design and understanding of these novel structures as well as show comparisons with experimental measurements of a three dimensional photonic crystal.
