This talk presents a framework for deriving well-posed transition regime models. Traditionally moment closures or Chapman-Enskog type expansions have been used to derive such models. Moment closures lead to large first-order systems while expansions yield a single higher order equation that can be ill-posed. Elements of both these traditional approaches are present in the new framework, which yields well-posed systems of moderate size and order that capture the same formal accuracy as both larger moment systems and higher order Chapman-Enskog approximations.
