The study of semiclassical limits of nonlinear fields using tools from integrable systems has expanded over the past decade. It has become clear that these limits are rich in phenomena that had been beyond the grasp classical analytical tools. This talk will survey the history of these investigations, and introduce some of the tools employed in them. Hopefully it will provide some context for later talks at the workshop. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation will serve as the main example.
