A Two Phase Flow Model Including Dynamics of Interfacial Area

Joint work with H.F. Nordhaug, W.G. Gray and M.S. Espedal.

In this talk we present a recent model for two phase flow which includes interfacial area as a variable. The model is based on work by Gray, Hassanizadeh and others, on providing a more systematic approach for deriving continuum scale equations for multiphase flow in porous media. The new model leads to a 2x2 set of coupled equations for saturation and interfacial area. We suggest some ways to parametrize constitutive relationships based on these variables. Finally some prelimenary computational results will be shown.
