Local Area Networks (LANS) are shifting to highspeed gigabit
networks using inexpensive high speed VCSELS or Fabry-Perot
lasers and specialized multimode fiber. This talk will summarize
the background and progress in modeling of the laser launch
and performance of the fibers, and review some open questions
suitable for the IMA workshop.
These include optimal estimation of the modal power distribution,
optimal utilization of the differential mode delay (DMD) measurement
data to characterize the fiber, and improved models of the interaction
of fiber and launch parameters.
