Thomas Yizhao Hou Named AAAS Fellow. Thomas Yizhao Hou, professor of applied and computational mathematics, California Institute of Technology and IMA Board of Governors member, has been elected to the 2011 American Academy of Arts and Sciences class of fellows.
Anna Mazzucato Wins 2011 Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize. Anna Mazzucato, an IMA postdoctoral fellow in 2002 and a long-term visitor, has been awarded the Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize for 2011. Mazzucato is associate professor of mathematics at Pennsylvania State University.
IMA REU Students Awarded Poster Prize. Catherine Kealy, Wanyi Li, and Charles Talbot, participants in IMA’s 2010 Interdisciplinary Research Experience for Undergraduates, were chosen as Prize Winners in the 2011 Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Undergraduate Poster Session.
Brenner Delivers Sonja Kovalevsky Lecture. Susanne C. Brenner, a 2010–2011 IMA Annual Program organizer and long-term visitor, delivered the Sonja Kovalevsky Lecture at the 2011 International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematicians (ICIAM).
Fadil Santosa Named SIAM Fellow. Fadil Santosa, director of the IMA since July 2008, was named a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the premier international organization devoted to applied mathematics and computational science, in 2010.
Former IMA Postdoc Receives Blackwell-Tapia Prize. Trachette Jackson, a former IMA postdoctoral fellow, was the recipient of the 2010 Blackwell-Tapia Prize. Jackson is a professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan.
Wu Awarded Morningside Gold Medal. Sijue Wu, a long-term IMA visitor during the Complex Fluids and Complex Flows Annual Program, was awarded the Morningside Gold Medal at the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians in December 2010.
Arnold Named AAAS Fellow. Douglas N. Arnold, IMA director from 2001 to 2008 and the McKnight presidential professor of mathematics at the University of Minnesota, was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in December 2010.
Samad Elected President of IEEE CSS. Tariq Samad, a corporate fellow at Honeywell and a member of the IMA’s Industrial Advisory Board, was elected president of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) in January 2009.
Two Former IMA Postdoctoral Fellows Awarded 2009 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowships. Gerard Awanou and Chiu-Yen Kao, former postdoctoral researchers at the IMA, have been awarded prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowships. They join 10 other IMA postdoctoral researchers who have also won the prize since 1988.
Meza Receives 2008 Blackwell-Tapia Prize. Juan Meza, department head of the High Performance Computing Research Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, was awarded the 2008 Blackwell-Tapia Prize. Meza served on the IMA Board of Governors from January 1999 to December 2001 and organized several IMA workshops.
Former IMA Board Member Awarded Honorary Degree by the Royal Institute of Technology. Margaret Wright, a member of the IMA Board of Governors since 2005, was awarded an honorary Ph.D. degree by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm on November 2008.
IMA New Directions Short Course Instructor Named MacArthur Fellow. Alexei Kitaev, California Institute of Technology, was named the MacArthur fellow, a half-million-dollar award, often referred to as the “genius award.” Kitaev served as a New Directions Short Course instructor at the IMA in 2005.
Former IMA Director Receives the 2008 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Award. Douglas Arnold, IMA director from 2001 to 2008 and the McKnight presidential professor of mathematics at the University of Minnesota, received the 2008 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Award.
Arnold Named McKnight Presidential Endowed Professor. Douglas N. Arnold, former IMA director, was appointed by then University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks to a McKnight Presidential Endowed Professorship, among the highest honors for faculty at the University.
Douglas N. Arnold Elected President of SIAM. Douglas N. Arnold, IMA director from 2001 to 2008 and the McKnight presidential professor of mathematics at the University of Minnesota, was elected president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2009–2010).
Möbius Transformations Revealed Video Wins Award. The Möbius Transformations Revealed video, created by former IMA director Douglas N. Arnold and Jonathan Rogness, was honored in NSF’s 2007 Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.
IMA Program Organizer Wins Nobel Prize. Leonid Hurwicz, organizer of the second IMA annual program (1983–1984), was named one of three winners of the Nobel Prize for Economics in October 2007.
Former IMA Postdocs Awarded Sloan Research Fellowships. Selim Esedoglu and Xiantao Li. former postdoctoral fellows at the IMA from 2000 to 2002 and 2004 to 2005, respectively, were among 20 mathematicians to be awarded Sloan Research Fellowships in April 2007.
William A. Massey Awarded 2006 Blackwell-Tapia Prize. William Massey, a speaker at the IMA for several workshops, conferences, and programs and a professor at Princeton University, was awarded the 2006 Blackwell-Tapia Prize.
