IMA Volumes in Mathematics and its Applications

Instructions for Organizers Considering Editing an IMA Volume

The IMA welcomes publication of volumes resulting from IMA workshops and other IMA activities especially when they offer something of wide interest not readily available: for example, well written tutorial or survey material in a new or rapidly developing area. The volumes are published by Springer Science + Business Media, LLC under their IMA Volumes in Mathematics and its Applications Series and usually one or more of the organizers of the relevant IMA program serve as the editors for the volume. 148 volumes in all have been published since IMA's founding in 1982, with several of them becoming important reference for a number of subjects.

To put together a volume, an editorial committee should be determined with one person designated lead editor. The lead editor will be the recipient of all the submissions. All editors can be involved with invitations to authors to contribute and further correspondence with them and obtaining reviews of contributions.

Authors are required to produce manuscripts in the standard IMA Volumes style. Although contribution typically run between 10-20 printed pages, we leave it up to the editors to decide on the appropriate lengths of the papers, and the number of contributors to the volume. For authors using LaTeX, sample and macros for this style is available at

ftp://ftp.ima.umn.edu/ima-styles/LaTeX2e-ima-style/

Materials to assist authors not using LaTeX are in preparation.

When papers are in their final form, the IMA will take over with the production.

The following schedule should be observed to get the book published in a timely manner.

  • editors issue invitations to contribute to potential authors, usually within a week or two of the end of the program in question; submissions are usually due to the lead editor within 4 months
  • by 4 months later: authors have submitted papers; editors obtain reviews for the submissions
  • by 1 month later: editors forward referees reports and comments to authors
  • by 1 month later: authors return revised papers to editors
  • by 1 month later: editors forward accepted papers to IMA for final processing
  • by 1 month later: galley proofs sent to authors; editors send front matter to IMA
  • by 1 month later: the IMA submits photo-ready copy to Springer

The IMA will send editors reminders as time goes on so that we can keep the book production on schedule. Please also make sure that the authors are kept aware of the relevant deadlines.

The IMA staff will do all it can to help in producing a high quality volume. The primary contact for this is Patricia V. Brick, pubs@ima.umn.edu.

If you plan to edit a volume, the first step to get the process started is to submit a one-page proposal. The proposal should include

  • Editors for the volume, identifying the lead editor,
  • Proposed due date for contributions (typically four months after issuance of invitations)
  • Tentative title of the volume and a short description of the volume and the rationale behind it (what will this volume add to the literature; who comprises the expected audience). This should indicate the approximate number of contributions, length of the contributions, and their nature (e.g., survey chapters, tutorials, technical papers, a mix of these, etc.)
The proposal should be mailed to the IMA addressed to Deputy Director (series co-editor) at .

A sample invitation letter to a potential contributor , which you should feel free to edit, is provided for your convenience.
