The IMA will host the 2006
Blackwell-Tapia
Conference, November 3-4, 2006. This is the fourth in a series of
biannual conferences honoring David Blackwell and Richard Tapia, two
seminal figures who have inspired a generation of African-American, Native
American and Latino/Latina students to pursue careers in mathematics.
This one and a half day conference is intended to celebrate and advance
their achievements, informing
students about career opportunities in mathematics and providing a
stimulating and supportive environment in which they can network with other
students and with mathematical scientists who play a leadership role in
their communities.
A high point of the meeting will be the awarding of
the 2006 Blackwell-Tapia prize to
William A. Massey, Edwin S. Wiley Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University. The prize recognizes Dr.
Massey's accomplishments in mathematical research and in bringing more
under-represented minorities into the mathematical sciences.
More information is available in a linked news story
and press
release.
The conference program will include a mix of other activities aimed at providing participants considering a career in mathematics with a sense of the excitement the field provides and a chance to learn about specific opportunities.
Organizing committee:
Douglas N. Arnold (IMA),
David Manderscheid (Iowa),
Samuel Myers (Minnesota),
Tex Ostvig (Minnesota),
Arlie O. Petters (Duke).
