I will discuss two main areas of applied mathematical research, computer networking and data representations, by highlighting several problems I have worked on. As part of this discussion, I will explain how I came to involved in these problems given my mathematical background. These problems stem from non-traditional but highly important technological origins such as the Internet. Both have massive amounts of data in common and large algorithmic components. Solutions must be practical and easily implementable.
