Institute for Mathematics and its Applications
Contest in Modeling
2010-2011

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) are international contests where teams of undergraduates and high schoolers use mathematical modeling to present their solutions to real world problems. The competition challenges teams of students to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisors from over 900 institutions around the world. The next MCM and ICM will take place on February 10-14, 2011.

The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, at the University of Minnesota , will hold a practice session and administer local MCM/ICM competitions during October 2010. Performances in the local competition will be used to determine the teams of students representing the University of Minnesota at the international edition of the MCM/ICM, February 10-14, 2011. Keep in mind, the MCM and ICM are not so much about what you already know, but rather about what you can quickly learn in a new application area.

Interested students are encouraged to register to participate in the information and training session for the competition that IMA will hold on Saturday October 9th, 2010 in Lind Hall 305 from 10:00am to 12:30pm. A limited number of seats are available in the room, and these seats will be filled on a first registered basis.

Instructions for the IMA University of Minnesota MCM and ICM participants:

  • Participate in the information/training sessions we organize during the Fall Semester.
  • Register your team by Wednesday, October 20th, 5pm: email the list of your team-members to imitrea@ima.umn.edu (each MCM team is composed of up to 3 undergraduate students and each ICM team is composed of up to 3 highschool students.)
  • The local contest problems will be promptly emailed to you on Thursday, October 21st, at 8pm.
  • Spend the weekend building mathematical models, researching relevant literature and writing up your solutions. You can use all published materials, internet resources, and software. Credit whenever appropriate. You cannot discuss your work with anyone besides your team-mates.
  • Turn in 4 copies of your paper at the front desk in 114 Lind Hall by 4:30pm on Monday, October 25th, 2010.
