Photo Scanner on the Linux Machine

On the Linux side, teal has a HP 5100A Smart Photo Scanner which will scan slides, negatives, and photos, which you choose by pressing one of the three buttons on the front. User can use a command xsane or gimp to scan an image. When you use gimp, pick the menu Xtns->Acquire Image->hp:'dev'scanner from the tool palette. This will bring the scan dialog. From here you can get a preview, limit the area scanned, and scan you photos. They will then be opened into an untitled window in the Gimp, where you can edit them and save. If you use xsan, this first asks you to choose a scanner device, pick hp:/dev/scanner. From here you can get a preview, limit the area scanned, and scan you photos. The scanned image will be saved to the file name listed in the scan dialog.

There is an eject button on the scanner to get items out if the software seems not to be ejecting it for you. If that doesn't work, talk to someone in the sys office, and we'll remove it for you.
