Mathematica version 4 is a symbolic manipulation and graphics package. It is available on all of our Unix workstations by typing math at the prompt. A notebook style version of Mathematica is available as an X client by typing mathematica, and is also installed as an application on some Macintoshes. Documentation is a part of Mathematica.
MATLAB version 6/7 is a high-performance language for technical computing. It is intended for numeric calculations, particularly matrix manipulation. It has graphing capabilities, and an API that allows users to write C and Fortran programs that interact with MATLAB. Several toolboxes are available; check with the system staff if you have questions. MATLAB is installed on all of our Unix workstations, and is run by typing the command matlab6/matlab7 at the prompt. By default, matlab is matlab7.
FEMLAB version 2.3/3 is a multiphysics package in Matlab. To run the FEMLAB, just type femlab for FEMLAB3 or type femlab23.
Maple version V release 5/6/7 is also installed on all Unix workstations as either maple5/maple6/maple7 or xmaple5/xmaple6/xmaple7. Documentation is also available for Maple. By default, maple and xmaple is version V release 7.
