Logging in at a workstation

Your Unix account will work on any of the Institute's Linux or SGI workstations. You will need a separate account to use the Windows 2000/XP workstations in the public labs; just ask the systems staff if you need one. The Macintoshes are available for general use without a password at this time.

Most of our Linux workstations run gdm, the Gnome display manager, to control logins. If you see a login box with IMA Logo on the screen labeled something like ``Welcome to HOST_NAME'', you can begin the login process by typing your login name at the login: box. Then, type your password at the password: box; when you type your password, the characters you type will not appear on the screen and the cursor will not move so that your password is hidden from people who may be watching. If successful, the IMA login box will disappear to be replaced by a window with a control panel and a few icons that start on login.

If this is the first time that you've logged into the system, we suggest you change your password with yppasswd. See section 4.1 for instructions.
