Subject: new 'dotfiles' To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 15:29:44 -0500 (CDT) We've just updated the default "dotfiles" used to configure new accounts to include use of better paths and the fvwm2 window manager. We believe these to work well on any of our machines, but if you use them and notice problems, please notify sys@ima.umn.edu. The files are located in the home directory of user "template" (~template). If you want to try them out, type the command resetenv; cp ~template/.fvwm2rc ~/ at the Unix prompt on any IMA workstation. The resetenv command is a script that will copy some of your current dotfiles into a hidden directory ~/.old_dotfiles in case you don't like the new ones, and copy dotfiles from template's home directory into your home directory. It should be in /usr/local/bin on all of our workstations. Please feel free to contact us by e-mail or in Lind 436 if you have any questions. Steve Bonneville IMA System AdministratorReturn to Index

Folks --
We've set up seven additional Linux workstations in the large central space
in Lind ("Lind 407") in addition to the Suns and SGIs currently running in
the north lab in Lind ("Lind 400").
* Two machines, "proceed" and "proclaim", are 200 MHz Pentium Pros with
96 MB of RAM and 19"+ monitors, originally from Vincent but recently
reinstalled.
* Five machines, "yellow", "green", "blue", "violet", and "brown", are
400 MHz Pentium II workstations with 128 MB of physical memory and
and 19" monitors.
We're still working the bugs out of these machines, and if you notice any
problems, please e-mail ima-sys. Thanks!

Subject: Rebooting IMA workstations To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 10:53:25 -0500 (CDT) Hi there! This week I've noticed a number of people flipping power switches and otherwise rebooting computer workstations on the IMA network. This usually seems to be because they're trying to log in to the machine at its actual location, and it seems to be locked up. Unfortunately there's two problems with this. First, if the machine *is* messed up, we don't have a chance to figure out why it got that way, so it'll be likely to recur. Second, sometimes the local console may be locked up but remote users will still be logged in and able to work without noticing any problems. We'd like to give them a chance to save their work and log out before we reboot the machine. Also, there's a right way and a wrong way to reboot these machines; the wrong way can lead to data corruption and other new problems for the workstation. If you notice any problems with a workstation, please contact the IMA systems office. Our campus phone number is 4-4353; our e-mail is ima-sys@ima.umn.edu; we're located in Vincent 529. Thanks! Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 14:29:12 -0500 (CDT) To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Subject: Using the photo-scanner in the lab There are two ways to use the scanner attached to pc13 in the lab. First load the program `gimp', this is a graphic editing program similar to Photoshop. Then pick the menu Xtns->Acquire Image->hp:'dev'scanner from the tool palette. This will bring the scan dialog. From here you can get a preview, limit the area scanned, and scan you photos. They will then be opened into an untitled window in the Gimp, where you can edit them and save. Second way is to run the scanner software from the command line, the command is `xscanimage'. This first asks you to choose a scanner device, pick hp:/dev/scanner. From here you can get a preview, limit the area scanned, and scan you photos. The scanned image will be saved to the file name listed in the scan dialog. Place the item to be scanned into the scanner, it will wake-up and grab the item just enough to hold it. Then tell the scanner software to scan the item. The scanner will scan slides, negatives, and photos, which you choose by pressing one of the three buttons on the front. -Slides need to be produces on a frame of 35mm slide film and mounted in a holder not more than 1.8mm think. (unmounted or glass-mounted will not work.) To scan a slide, you need to insert it narrow side in, emulsion side down. -Negatives must be from 35mm film, and strips of up to 6 can be scanned at once. To scan negatives, they must be flat (not curled), and emulsion side down. -Prints can be up to 5"x7" (12.5cm x 17.5cm). For smaller photos, stop by the sys office and checkout the Photo Sleeve. To scan prints, just insert them facing upwards. There is an eject button on the scanner to get items out if the software seems not to be ejecting it for you. If that doesn't work, talk to someone in the sys office, and we'll remove it for you. There are some things that you may wish to keep in mind when using the photo-scanner found by `man sane-hp'. Most of these things don't appear to be a problem if you scan images using the Gimp.Return to Index

Subject: Perl on Sun equipment To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 15:49:33 -0600 (CST) We've rearranged Perl slightly on our Sun workstations. The binary for /usr/local/bin/perl is now using /usr/local/bin/perl5 (5.004) instead of /usr/local/bin/perl4 (4.036). Perl will now work the same way on all of our UNIX workstations. However, older Perl scripts that aren't Perl 5 compatible which you've been running on the Suns might break unless you change them to specify perl4. Subject: Printer Upgrades To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Tue, 30 Dec 1997 01:53:00 -0600 (CST) After we completed work on the file server this evening, we took the opportunity to make some hardware upgrades to the printers around the IMA. It's pretty late, so I'm going to be brief. * lounge (VinH 502): The lounge printer has been upgraded to a HP LaserJet 4M+ with duplex unit (actually the former systems office printer). All jobs to "lounge" will now be duplex (print on both sides of the page). A separate "lounge1" or "lounge-single" queue has been created to print single-sided jobs. * sys (VinH 529): The sys printer has been replaced with an HP LaserJet 4000 TN with large tray and duplex unit. This is a 16 ppm high-resolution printer, located where the 4M+ was. The "sys" duplex queue now prints on this printer. I've added a new "sys1" or "sys-single" queue which will print single-sided on this printer. * color (VinH 529): The color printer has been moved onto a larger and sturdier table and now sits next to the "sys" printer in the systems office. We're still making changes to the software supporting printing. Please let us know if you notice problems. Thanks! Steve Bonneville IMA System AdministratorReturn to Index

Subject: New sound hardware To: ima-sys@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 14:59:47 -0600 (CST) This is a quick overview of the sound card hardware on pc3 and pc4. Both of the Dell Pentium II workstations have built-in motherboard sound hardware which uses the Yamaha OPL3-SA3 chipset (YMF715). A Yamaha General MIDI YMF721 chip is also on the motherboard, but I haven't been able to verify if we're accessing it or not. We are able to use playmidi to play back MIDI files, however. The hardware is PnP, so I'm using the isapnp toolkit to make sure that it's being configured properly. The file /etc/isapnp.conf contains details of the configuration. Sound drivers are compiled as a loadable kernel module. It's a MSS/WSS compatible chipset, so both OPL-2/OPL-3 FM synthesis and MSS/WSS drivers should be included when compiling the kernel. We're currently using IRQ 11, DMA 0, and I/O at 0x530 as settings for the sound hardware. Red Hat Linux ships with /dev/sequencer set to permissions 664; I changed this to 666 to give general users full access to it. All other permissions should be fine. Oh, and if you do recompile the kernel on one of these machines, remember to include the ATAPI Floppy support that the Zip drive requires, otherwise it won't work. -- SteveReturn to Index
Subject: New Linux Workstations To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 15:44:08 -0600 (CST) Two new Linux workstations have been set up for use, pc3 and pc4. Both machines are 300 MHz Pentium II workstations assembled by Dell, and are equipped with large monitors, 128 MB of physical RAM and 512 MB of swap space, and are running Red Hat Linux 4.2 with a custom 2.0.31 kernel. In addition to a CDROM drive and 3.5" floppy, both of the new machines are equipped with internal Iomega Zip drives. Zip drives take a floppy-like cartridge that can store up to 100 MB of data, and seem to be becoming fairly common on PC workstations. One of the new machines, pc4, is available in the public lab to allow general access to the zip drive and workstation. Files may be written to MSDOS-formatted zip disks using the "mtools" utilities in the same way as it works for floppy disks. The MSDOS drive is Z: for the zip drive. Mac-formatted zip disks may be read and written using the "hfsutils" package in the same way as floppies; use the UNIX device /dev/hdd instead of /dev/fd0 if you want to access the zip drive. We have man pages for both packages on the system. Eject zip disks by pressing the round button on the drive. We're still finishing up testing of both machines. If you notice any problems or missing software on either, please let us know so we can fix any problems. Steve Bonneville IMA System AdministratorReturn to Index

This machine, mbone.ima.umn.edu, is now available for general use. "mbone" is an SGI O2 workstation running the IRIX 6.3 operating system. It has a 180 MHz R5000 CPU, 64 MB of RAM, a 155 MB/s ATM network card, and a CD-ROM drive. NFS is used to allow access to user disk space on the central file server. The new workstation is being used by the IMA in experiments with MBone, the IP Multicast Backbone on the Internet. IP Multicast allows a site to transmit data efficiently to multiple specified destination sites. The MBone is used primarily to transmit audio and video data for teleconferencing over the Internet and as a testbed for multicast technology. Currently, we're only using MBone to receive multicast transmissions. We've installed some MBone utilities in /usr/local/mbone/bin for use on the mbone workstation. The program "sdr" is an X-based utility to provide a list of scheduled transmissions and an easy way to start up utilities to recieve them. If you're interested in finding out more about the MBone, please feel free to drop by the systems office in Vincent 529. Otherwise, mbone should function like the other SGI workstations. Since installing the new gcc compiler, two additional upgrades of note
have been made on the Sun workstations:
UPGRADE: GNU runoff (groff) version 1.10
I've recompiled the groff package with gcc 2.7.2.1. The old
version was not functioning properly.
UPGRADE: tcsh version 6.07.02
The default user shell at the IMA, tcsh, has been upgraded on the
Suns to 6.07.02 from 6.00.01. This fixes a number of small bugs
and adds several features. The shell built-in command "where"
should now work on Sun workstations, for example. The SGI and
Linux workstations are still using version 6.06 but will probably
be upgraded as time permits. The only significant difference
between 6.07 and 6.06 is the new shell variable "implicitcd" and
the associated implicitcd feature.

Subject: Sun compiler upgrades
In the last few days, I've made some major upgrades to compilers on our
Sun workstations. If you notice any problems with the following software
packages that appear to be due to errors in configuration, please notify
the systems office at ima-sys@ima.umn.edu immediately.
These upgrades only affect Sun workstations.
UPGRADE: GNU assembler (as) version 2.8.
The GNU assembler in /usr/local/bin/as has been upgraded to version
2.8 from version 2.1. The upgrade was performed due to problems
observed when used with newer C compilers, and general obsolescence
of the assembler. Several supporting libraries were also upgraded.
UPGRADE: GNU C/C++ compiler (gcc) version 2.7.2.1.
I've upgraded the gcc package to version 2.7.2.1 from version 2.7.0.
The older version was very obsolete, and beginning to cause problems
with compiles. In particular, changes to the draft C++ standard
mandated an upgrade. The new package understands the "namespace"
keyword, but does not support it at this time. I believe that C++
templates and exceptions are fully supported. My preliminary tests
also suggest that there may be a substantial increase in compilation
speed with this new version.
UPGRADE: GNU libg++ library package version 2.7.2.
As part of the gcc upgrade, I've also upgraded several libraries
and C++ include files supporting gcc.
Some tweaking of these packages to improve performance may continue
over the course of the next few days. Please contact me if you have
any questions.

Cray T3E upgrade
----------------
The Supercomputing Institute and MSC Inc. are pleased to
announce that the Cray T3E resources offered by MSC Inc. were
upgraded Thursday, June 19, to a Cray T3E-900 LC272/512
system. The machine name "ss" will continue to be used to
provide this service. The upgraded service will provide
additional command and application processors, as well an
increase in the performance per processor. All other aspects
of the service, including interactive and NQS queue limits
will remain the same and this information can be found on the
world wide web at
http://www.msc.edu/msi/techbrief/t3e_service.html
The newly installed Cray T3E system is Cray Research Inc.'s
second generation of scalable parallel processing systems to
be built around a commodity microprocessorthe DEC Alpha
21164A (EV5) microprocessor. The T3E-900 processors run at
450 MHz (compared to 300 MHz in previous T3E system and 150
MHz in the previous T3D system). In addition to fast
processors, these systems feature a latency-hiding memory
interface and a high-performance interprocessor interconnect.
The interprocessor network's 3-D bi-directional torus design
helps to minimize the number of hops between nodes and
provides excellent scalability up to a maximum configuration
of 2048 processing elements (PEs).
The configuration of the newly installed system contains a
total of 272 processing elements, of which 256 are available
for multi-PE applications. The remaining PEs are used for
support functions and to provide single-PE "command"
functions, such as compiling and linking. Rated at a
theoretical peak of 900 megaflops per PE, the peak
performance delivered by the 256 "Application PEs" is greater
than 230 gigaflops. Currently 128 megabytes of memory are
available per PE for use by each application.
In addition to the high performance and bandwidth of the PE,
and the high scalability through the low-latency and high
bandwidth interconnect, the Cray T3E-900 systems have two
unique features: STREAMS and E-Registers. STREAMS maximize
local memory bandwidth, allowing the microprocessor to run at
full speed for vector-like data references. E-Registers
provide gather/scatter operations for local and remote memory
references and utilize the full bandwidth of the interconnect
for single-word remote reads and writes.
All Cray T3E systems run the UNICOS/mk operation system, a
scalable version of Cray's UNICOS operating system.

Subject: Modem Changes To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 15:33:15 -0500 (CDT) The following message only affects IMA visitors and staff who use the University modem pool to connect to the IMA systems from off-site. In the near future, there will be some changes to the way that dial-up access to the University's central modem pool works. By July 15, you will no longer be able to gain access to the modem pool at 627-4250 by using your IMA account and password. Instead, you will be required to access the modems with a central "X.500" account administered by University Networking and Telecommunications Services (NTS). You will still use your IMA account and password to access the IMA workstations locally, over the Internet, and after gaining access to the modem pool; the X.500 account and password will only be required for initial dial-up access from home via modem. In addition, the only phone number the University will continue to use for modem pool access will be 627-4250. The older numbers (such as 626-9600) will be shut off by NTS shortly. NTS has also instituted a fee for modem usage above thirty hours a month. You will be charged $4 for every thirty hours (or fraction) beyond the first thirty hours you spend connected to the system by modem. If you are using the modems for IMA business, arrangements can be made to take care of this; speak to your area supervisor. Subject: Computer Lab Door To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 08:50:06 -0500 (CDT) It's been reported to me that the door to the IMA computer lab in Vincent Hall has been left propped open after-hours several times in the last week. Most recently, the door was found propped open and the lab deserted last night at 7 PM. Folks, we can't do this. I know it's hot in the lab, and that's why this is happening. But we can't leave that room unsecured after-hours, either. Vincent is a public building on an urban campus, and the equipment in the lab is a target for potential thievery. Other campus departments have suffered major losses in the last few months, and I don't want the IMA to become one of them. We've been lucky to have had a good record with this so far, and I don't want to see it ruined. Thanks. Steve Bonneville IMA System AdministratorReturn to Index
Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 17:58:39 -0500 To: ima-all@mail.ima.umn.edu Subject: IMA Mail Problems Recently, a number of people who were former visitors at the IMA have received mail from ima@ima.umn.edu inadvertently. The "ima" mail list is normally used for communications of IMA events to persons currently in residence at the IMA. Due to a problem with the normal system, mailings normally restricted to the "ima" list were sent to all accounts and user mail aliases still registered on the IMA system while repairs were in progress. However, a number of old IMA accounts and aliases which have not yet been fully deactivated have been forwarding this mail to off-site accounts. This led to a number of people inadvertently receiving announcements of upcoming IMA activities. We apologize for any inconvenience. At this time, we expect that none of these accounts should still be getting mail from ima@ima.umn.edu, except for bounced mail caused by persons attempting to send mail to that address before this morning. If you are still experiencing problems with IMA mailings, please feel free to mail either bonnevil@ima.umn.edu, postmaster@ima.umn.edu, or ima-sys@ima.umn.edu and let us know how we can be of assistance. Thank you for your patience. Steve Bonneville IMA System AdministratorReturn to Index
Date: Mon, 10 Feb 1997 12:29:03 -0600 To: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Subject: University Modem Pool Changes Folks -- Those of you who access IMA computers through the University modem pool may already have heard about the upcoming changes to the way that they work. This message will attempt to clarify what we understand these changes will be, and how they may affect you. University Networking and Telecommunications Services (NTS) has decided to institute charges for use of the central modem pool. The first thirty hours of time on the modems each month will still be free, but for every additional thirty hours connect time in that month (rounding up) they will charge $4 (four dollars). The IMA has decided that charges run up in the course of your work here can be paid by the institute. These charges will need to be approved by your supervisor. Post-docs and visitors should work through Dr. Gulliver. We're still working out how this process will work with the accounting office, NTS, and the University; I expect to learn more details soon. In addition, the "fanout" system that allows you to use your IMA account name and password to access the modem pool will be phased out. In the future, you will need to use a staff account on the central University system to access the modem pool. At this time, I have no details or timetable for when this will occur. I will send a second message just as soon as we can get more information from NTS on when this will happen. This should not affect any of you who do not use the campus modems to connect to the University and the IMA computers from home. If you have any questions about this subject, please feel free to ask. Tue Nov 19 1996 18:40:31 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Subject: AppleTalk printing Folks -- A quick "heads-up" about printing from IMA Macs. This afternoon, I changed the appletalk names of the public printers (lab, color, sys, and lounge) to match their UNIX names more closely and to have the correct room numbers. If you use a desktop printer icon on the desktop to select one of these printers, you may need to make a new printer icon by selecting the printer from the Chooser. If you want help with this, let me know. This only affects Macintosh printing. Printing from within UNIX accounts is unaffected. Steve Bonneville IMA System Administrator
Tue Nov 12 17:42:15 1996 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Subject: NT 4.0 Folks -- As you may have noticed, I have been upgrading our two Windows NT workstations over the past couple of days to version 4.0. The new version works basically the same way as NT 3.51, but has the same user-friendly GUI as Windows 95 and a number of other enhancements. Most of the functions of these machines should now be working; the standard applications and network access both function. However, problems may appear in the next few days due to the upgrade. Please let us know if you have any problems. I am still doing some work on these machines -- for example, printing services are temporarily out of order on the NT machines, but should be working again soon. In order to use teTeX, if you haven't updated your dot files, you need to add the path /usr/local/teTeX/bin/i686-linux (for Linux machines). The Java JDK also requires you to add a new path, I believe /usr/local/java/bin. I expect that there will be some changes and more announcements about these machines over the next few days. Please bear with us while we bring everything up to speed, and let us know what problems you see. Steve Bonneville IMA System Administrator
Wed, 9 Oct 1996 11:52:30 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@mail.ima.umn.edu Subject: resetenv It's come to my attention that for some reason this script is refusing to run on Suns. I suggest that if you want to run resetenv, try it on a SGI or one of the new Linux workstations instead. Also, you should be aware that it probably isn't necessary for you to update your dot files if you won't be using a Linux machine; however, the new files probably will work better than the old, so it's a good idea. -- Steve
Wed, 9 Oct 1996 11:20:46 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@ima.umn.edu Subject: ANNOUNCE: New "Dot Files" Folks -- I've done some work to update our default "dot-files" to reflect our new Linux configuration, and to improve their functionality. These new default dot-files can be found in the directory ~template, and are world-readable. In order to make it easy to update your files, I have put together a Perl script called "resetenv" in /usr/local/bin. Running this script will update your dot-files to our current defaults, saving your existing files in a directory called ~/.old_dotfiles. The script will tell you what files will be moved and give you a chance to abort before it does anything. If you do not abort but change your mind, your old files can be copied back from ~/.old_dotfiles. The changes that have been made to the dot-files are fairly extensive. Two to note are that the old ".alias" file is called ".aliases" now; if you run resetenv and want your old aliases, you may want to move .alias to .aliases. Secondly, most of your search paths are now set in a file called ".paths" which is sourced by .cshrc. This was done to make it easier to manage your search paths without continually tinkering with your .cshrc file. The .twmrc file has been altered slightly, so some ways that the window manager worked (or didn't) in the past have changed, I hope for the better. It may feel slightly awkward at first if you've gotten used to the old configuration, but things should be more consistent overall. One side effect of fixing the dot files is that fvwm now is found properly on all architectures. Those of you who prefer fvwm over twm should be able to use it without any problems, if you make this upgrade and change your .xsession file appropriately. I haven't put together an IMA-specific .fvwmrc file; I may at some later date. If you see any problems with the new dot-files or have any questions, please let me know. Wed, 9 Oct 1996 11:14:35 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@ima.umn.edu Subject: ANNOUNCE: New Linux Workstations Folks -- Starting today, I will begin to set up our new Linux workstations in offices around the IMA. These twelve machines will be named "pc5" through "pc16", and will be accessible over the network by remote login as well as at their consoles. The rest of this message will consist of information about this new hardware. Each machine is a Gateway G6-200 workstation equipped with a 200 MHz Pentium Pro CPU. They each have 96 megabytes of RAM and about 512 megabytes of swap space. A CD-ROM and 3.5" floppy are available on each machine. The hard drives are Seagate 2 gigabyte Ultra-Wide SCSI devices. The monitor is a 21" Vivitron driven by a Matrox PCI card. Network is a 10/100-base-T ethernet card, which will be connected to a 10 base-T switched hub for the time being. Three-button Logitech mice are supplied. At this time, Linux is the only OS installed on these machines. The installation is based around Slackware 3.1, and we have installed the most recent "production" Linux kernel, 2.0.21. Beyond the standard distribution, we have upgraded some of the older software and placed some local packages on each machine. These include: * MPICH-1.0.14, the MPI implementation. * Both Matlab and Mathematica for Linux. * Sun's Java Development Kit and the Linux Java binary support. This allows you to set the executable bit on a *.class file compiled by javac and run it as if it were a normal binary or shell script. * "netscape" and "netscape-gold", both version 3.0. * We've replaced Slackware's NTeX distribution with teTeX. We would appreciate your feedback on how teTeX works for you. * We have "g77", the GNU Fortran 77 compiler installed. We have linked f77 to g77 on these machines instead of using a script that runs f2c and then gcc as f77, as some Linux machines do. * The LAPACK libraries for Fortran are installed, but I have not tested them thoroughly. Let me know if you see problems. * Both perl4 and perl5 are installed. The "perl" binary points to perl4.036; "perl5" points to perl5.003. ...in addition, of course, to the wide collection of standard UNIX and X utilities which are part of a full Linux distribution. If you have any suggestions for software that we should have on these machines but don't, please drop me a line and we'll check it out. At this time, two workstations are installed; the only one available for use is pc12. The other, pc5, is the prototype Linux machine that I am using to install the others, and for that reason will be refusing logins for the time being. More will be available soon. Please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions! Steve Bonneville IMA System Administrator
Mon Sep 30 11:49:34 1996 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@s2.ima.umn.edu Subject: Software evaluation Folks -- We've installed evaluation copies of AVS and Explorer on our SGI R10000 Indigo 2 workstations (i9, i10, and i11). We would appreciate it if those of you who will be using these packages would evaluate them and let us know what you think as soon as possible. The software should be installed in /usr/avs and /usr/explorer. You may wish to add the following search path to your .cshrc file: set path ( $path /usr/avs/bin /usr/explorer/bin ) which is the location of the binaries for these programs. If you see any problems with the programs or their installation, please contact Kumsup or myself about it. Right now, our other SGI R10000 Indigo 2 workstation, i6, is still down. We are currently using the machine for testing associated with the work going on with our new ATM fiber optic network, and hope to return it to regular service shortly. Fri Sep 20 12:58:37 1996 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@ima.umn.edu Subject: Announcements Folks -- It's come to my attention that some of you were not recieving mail sent to the ima@ima.umn.edu mailing list. I have just finished fixing this problem. If any of you know of a colleague that is supposed to be getting this mail but is not, please contact me. Here's a fast run-down of some recent announcements of interest: * The PC in the lab in VinH 557, pc2, has been installed with Windows NT 3.5.1. It no longer boots into Linux mode. We will soon be installing new Linux workstations in the lab and the offices. * Please do not power-cycle pc2; someone apparently did this several times yesterday afternoon. This can cause data loss and damage to computers which run modern operating systems. Please let the Systems Office know if there is a problem with a machine, so we can fix it once and for all. * We have installed Sun's Tcl/Tk web plugin for Netscape on the UNIX workstations. Please let us know if you see problems. More info is available at http://www.sun.com/960710/cover/tcl.html * I've rearranged and upgraded our Netscape distributions on our UNIX workstations so that there's some consistency. The new arrangement is: netscape runs the most current version (now 3.0) netscape1 runs 1.1x netscape2 runs 2.02 netscape3 runs the most current revision 3 version (now 3.0) Older versions will not be available on the new Linux workstations. * Some of our xterms crash when using newer versions of netscape. It seems that if you use a private colormap for netscape by starting it with the "netscape -install" option, you can use less memory and avoid this problem. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to drop us a line at ima-sys@ima.umn.edu. Steve Bonneville IMA Systems Administrator
Thu Sep 19 18:38:20 1996 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@ima.umn.edu Subject: NT Machine (pc2) Folks -- Someone shut off the NT machine in the lab (Vincent 557) at some point today. In fact, it appears that it was rebooted about eight times between about three and four this afternoon, and then left turned off. Please do NOT do this. Be especially sure not to simply turn off the power on an NT machine (or, in fact, any of our computers) instead of using the normal safe shutdown procedures. This can cause data to be lost and other damage to be done on machines running modern operating systems. If a machine seems to be broken or unresponsive, please contact one of the system administrators in Vincent 529 or send us e-mail at ima-sys. We need to know if a machine is malfunctioning so that we can fix the original problem and restart it safely. Thanks for your cooperation! Steve Bonneville IMA System Administrator

Tue Sep 10 10:03:01 1996 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@s2.ima.umn.edu Subject: Netscape upgrades Folks -- I've just completed a minor overhaul of our netscape distributions on the SGI and Sun workstations, to clear out some of the more confusing binaries and reduce redundancy. I've rearranged the commands slightly, as well, and installed the most up to date version (3.0). The new arrangement is: netscape will run the most current version. (currently 3.0) netscape1 will run netscape 1.1 or 1.12, depending on platform netscape2 will run netscape 2.02 netscape3 will run the most up-to-date version 3 of netscape (currently version 3.0) This should hopefully reduce confusion among our visitors as well as make available any version of netscape that might be needed. If you experience any problems with the new arrangement, please contact us by e-mail at ima-sys, or drop by. A reminder for xterm users -- you may need to use netscape's -install option to use a private colormap to avoid crashing your machine due to running out of memory when using the newer versions, which use more memory than older versions. Mon Sep 9 12:56:19 1996 From: "Steven Bonneville"Return to IndexTo: ima@s2.ima.umn.edu Subject: Netscape on HP, NCD xterms Folks -- We've had a number of problems reported today with using netscape version 2 or 3 on our NCD and Hewlett-Packard xterms. When netscape is run, it seems to cause the xterm to run out of memory and crash. This problem appears to be caused because the terminal is using up all its memory by trying to load too many screen colors at once. We recommend that you tell netscape to use a private color map with the -install option: % netscape2 -install This seems to relieve the problem. Steve Bonneville IMA System Administrator
Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 11:24:08 -0500 (CDT) From: Fred DullesReturn to IndexTo: announce@s2 Subject: Mail in Irises and new host i5 The IMA systems staff would like to announce the addition of i5, a new workstation in the IMA computer lab. It is an SGI 75MHz Power Indigo 2, with an R8000 processor and 256 MBytes of RAM. You can take i5 for a test drive via telnet or rlogin, or head down to the lab (rm 557) and check out the graphics on the 20" color monitor. The addition of this workstation gives a significant boost to the number-crunching power of our machines, and should help reduce the load on the other systems. Secondly, you may now get e-mail on all of our SGI's (i1 - i5) and on the linux-based PC's (pc1-pc3.) For those of you that use the pine mailer, you need to add the following line to your .pinerc file: inbox-path=/usr/spool/mail/$USER In the default .pinerc; the inbox path is left blank, but the version of pine on the SGI's don't like that. Elm users should have no problems. Feel free to stop by 510, or send e-mail to ima-sys if you have any questions.
