The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) seeks
a
person to serve as Associate Director for two years beginning
in
August 2006.
The IMA is located on the Minneapolis campus of the University
of
Minnesota. Since its founding in 1982 as the result of a
national
competition, the IMA has been a major national institute with
the
mission of fostering interdisciplinary research which links
high
caliber mathematics with important problems from other
disciplines,
technology, industry, and society, and of strengthening the
talent
base engaged in mathematical research applied to or relevant to
such
problems. The IMA runs visitor programs involving around 1200
scientists per year, with annual budget of about $5.5M. The
major
source of funding of the IMA is the National Science
Foundation, which
recently awarded a grant of $19.5M for the period 2005-2010.

The Associate Director will work with the Director and Deputy
Director,
the IMA staff, and program organizers on a variety of IMA
activities,
especially program implementation, participant applications,
publicity
and special projects. A successful candidate should have a
PhD in mathematics or a related field and a successful record
in and
broad view of mathematical research, a commitment to the IMA
mission,
and administrative or organizational experience. The
Associate
Director will work in the exceptional scientific environment
provided
by the IMA, and will contribute to shaping the international
research
agenda. Research activity is compatible with the position, and
a
visiting faculty position at the University of Minnesota may be
arranged if appropriate.
