A number of techniques will be discussed in this talk on how a finite element equation posed on an unstructured grid in two or three dimensions can be solved within optimal computational complexity by special multigrid methods such as nonnested multigrid methods, agglomeration methods and auxiliary space methods. Certain ellipic (and parabolic) problems including convection dominated equations will be discussed as examples.
