In this lecture we will survey results on the approximation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Special emphasis will be given to Galerkin approximations of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of variationally posed eigenvalue problems. Application will be made to finite element approximation of eigenvalue problems for differential operators.
