We have a look at the properties of special functions as they
occur classically and how they are characterised by group theory.
Emphasis is placed on special functions that generalise hypergeometric
functions. Some examples on how these functions occur in the
study of quantum integrability and perturbations of black holes
are discussed. Some unsolved problems are mentioned as well
as an outline of future developments.
