This talk describes a series of applications of genetic algorithms
to real problems in the optimization of telecommunications network
design and in the routing of messages in telecommunications
networks. The examples will show that the use of genetic algorithms
together with other optimization algorithms can produce results
better than the bestknown for real problems. Perhaps the most
interesting feature of the genetic algorithms described is their
employment of multi-part chromosomes that are used at multiple
stages in the building of a network design.
