Talk abstract:
Data Mining and its Industrial Applications
Chid Apte, IBM Watson Research Labs
Recent advances in the areas of machine learning, pattern
recognition, and statistics, coupled with the availability of
high volume data in business and industry, have given rise to
a new level of interest in the applications of knowledge discovery
and data mining. Using analytical methods for pattern extraction,
clustering, and data modeling, it is possible to extract useful
information from commerical data and put that information to
new and innovative uses to further a business goal or strategy.
The technical underpinnings of many of these techniques will
be discussed, and some key industrial application scenarios
highlighted.
