Talk abstract:
What Can We Learn from International Comparisons in School Mathematics?
Zalman Usiskin, University of Chicago
Noticeably absent from the official reports and media summaries
of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) results
are any references to what happened in the first and second studies. Yet,
if we ignore earlier studies when a new one appears, we will learn very
little, and in fact, the evidence is that much of what was considered new
in TIMSS reports was known from earlier studies. This talk summarizes some
of what we have learned from international studies to date.
