We discuss algorithms and simulations for the collision of rigid and elastic bodies. The algorithms are discussed in the context of variational integration algorithms (in the sense of Veselov) for mechanical systems (both ode's and pde's) with constraints and symmetry. A broader context, including phenomena such as cracking and fragmentation processes, in which complex collision sequences occur, will also be presented.
