The existence of invariant rectangles for solutions of reaction-diffusion equations has powerful consequences for the analysis of these problems. Likewise, the existence of invariant rectangles for numerical solutions has strong consequences on the behavior of the approximation. We explain some of these, especially with respect to estimation of the error, and then describe two ways to perserve invariant rectangles under discretization.
