Ever since my first time at the IMA eleven years ago, it has always been a joy to come back. This city and the IMA holds a special place in my life. The IMA has not only shaped my career, but also my personal life - in fact, in an earlier visit here, I met my wife-to-be. (Talk about "Broader Impact"!) This year, due to the fortunate coincidence of my research interests and the IMA's annual theme, I am back again, and enjoying every minute. I find the Minnesota charm everywhere, from Garrison Keillor's shows, to the politeness of the bus drivers. And, to top it all, the IMA is a great place to work. Thanks to the IMA, I had the pleasure of co-organizing a finite element circus honoring three senior scholars. People came from far and near (triple the usual attendance). Perhaps it was all that wine I drank then, but I had this warm fuzzy feeling that the generation that invented many of the finite element tricks were sharing their insights with the young'ones. Finite elements are in good health indeed. |

After spending 2006-2008 as a postdoc at the IMA, my family and I headed out to Fort Collins so that I could take a tenure-track position at Colorado State. We aren't big skiers (yet), but we've had a blast hiking around the mountains and soaking up the unique Fort Collins culture. We incremented our family size by one when Luke was born in August 2010. You might remember Rachel, who was born in February 2007 during a nasty blizzard. She's in preschool now and insists on cheering for both the Vikings and the Gophers - she's proud of her Minnesota blood! Math-wise, I have kept up with a number of the contacts I made at the IMA (what a great place for interacting with other researchers, especially those who aren't identical to you!) and just found out that a paper that has its roots with some other IMA visitors (Philipp Rostalski, Ioannis Fotiou) has been accepted. My family is now gearing up for a three month stint in Stockholm, at Institut Mittag-Leffler, for a special semester very similar to the IMA 2006-2007 Thematic Year. I hope the organizers manage to recreate some of the magic that the IMA cooked up back then! If nothing else, I am sure they will get the temperature about right (January in Sweden - yuck!) - that's the only thing I really don't miss about the Cities! |

For me the Cities would always be a place to come back to. After getting a Ph.D. in math from U of M in 2003, I returned as an IMA postdoc (2006-2008) and now have a lot of good stories to tell about both life in IMA and in the math department. Employed on a tenure-track in Georgia Tech, I am visiting the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Sweden this semester (Spring 2011) together with my wife, Josephine Yu (a visitor to IMA in 2007 and also an assistant professor at Georgia Tech), and will be back (yet again!) to the American Scandinavia in July to run a Macaulay2 workshop at... IMA. |
