It is shown that a very large class of non-linear partial differential equation models of locust swarming behaviour do not have travelling band solutions that would represent a migratory swarm. The implications of this result and possible alternative approaches to this problem are discussed.
This talk summarizes a recent result of Leah Edelstein-Keshet, James Watmough and Daniel Grunbaum (JMB 1998, 36:515-549).
