According to the mathematical model presented here the dynamics of HIV-1 infection can be explained by two simultaneous processes. Direct infection of CD4+ T-cell populations and ongoing generation and selection of HIV-1 variants with increasing reproductivity. Analysis of the model shows that the model can reproduce quantitatively some of the most striking findings concerning the pathegenesis of AIDS, including the long and variable incubation period.
