Talk abstract:

A Simple Model for Schooling Fish and its Effect on Predation

Frithjof Lutscher

The formation of big fish schools of various shapes through alignment is a striking example of animal aggregation and pattern formation. It is assumed that forming schools is one way to increase the chance of survival in the presence of predation. A simple model for aligning individuals is presented and several properties are discussed. Special emphasis is put on the interplay of predation and alignment in an predator prey model where the prey species shows alignment.
