State transition and channel symbol functions for a family of tailbiting trellis codes are presented. The code design is such that one avoids the need to set tail bits to zero for initialization. The mathematical structure of the Trellis that makes this property possible is also instrumental in channel symbol assignment for improved Euclidean distance distribution.
