Population-level models based on the SEIR framework work rather
well for childhood infections. These assume homogeneous mass
action mixing - however, in reality, we know that there are,
often violent, local scale epidemics, associated with the start
of school term, etc. Here, we examine this paradox, using time
series analysis and population models.
