This three-day IMA-National Institute for Mathematical Science (NIMS) Joint Workshop on Math in Industry will gather mathematicians from the United States, Europe, and Korea in academia and industry to discuss exciting collaborative opportunities.
The target audience for this workshop consists of faculty members, postdocs, and graduate students who are interested in successful applications of mathematics in industry and commerce. By bringing academic faculty, postdocs, and students together with industrial mathematicians, the workshop will aim to inform academic representatives about industrial opportunities and to help prepare junior representatives for careers in industry.
Industrial representatives will share their experiences and accomplishments with faculty about working in and with industry as well as some anecdotes from their work and careers. Postdocs and students will be informed about industry and the skills needed (beyond mathematical prowess) to make one effective in industry. The characteristics of programs that successfully place students in industry will also be discussed. Case studies will be presented and discussed and there will be panels covering industry-academic partnerships, the impact of mathematicians on industry, Internship programs, and success stories.
A limited number of applicants will be accepted to attend the workshop with financial support. Applicants must already have the PhD and a postdoctoral position or higher. Any visa requirements are the responsibility of the applicant. Some preference may be given to applicants from IMA participating institutions.
